Germany’s wine harvest has kicked off with high hopes this year. Many vineyards have already started picking early-ripening grapes, and some winemakers were even harvesting grapes for sparkling wine back in August. Things are looking good for German wines in 2024!

Top quality grapes for quality wines
Thanks to the sunny days in August and early September, grapes across Germany have ripened beautifully. The natural sweetness and flavours are reaching top levels for quality wine! Early varieties like Müller-Thurgau and Pinot Gris are already being picked with promising results. While some grapes are ripening faster in the south, others like Riesling still need a little more time to reach their full potential.

Recent rains have slowed the ripening just a bit, but winemakers aren’t rushing. They’re letting the grapes mature to get the best flavours. If autumn brings the right balance of warm days and cool nights, we’re in for some truly exceptional wines this year.

A challenging yet rewarding year for winemakers
2024 has been a tough but rewarding year for Germany’s winegrowers. The early part of the year was unusually rainy, which meant extra effort to protect the vines from disease. On top of that, vineyards in some regions like Franken and Württemberg were hit by a late frost in April, causing significant crop losses.
