German Winefinder: 5 top restaurants for German wine in London
Want to impress when next handed the wine list? Go for a German wine. Versatile and great for pairing with a whole host of different cuisines, there’s certainly a German wine for every occasion. So you know where to look, we’ve put together a short guide to the best restaurants where you can get your German wine fix in London:
For the noodle fans…Som Saa
Join the cool crowd and head to Shoreditch, home to Som Saa an ex pop-up
that has been crowdfunded into a permanent home in an old fabric factory. They serve a great selection of regional thai dishes, sweet spicy and the perfect partner for German Riesling! Check out the dedicated Riesling section of the wine list for some German gems.
For the traditionalists….German Gymnasium
Slap bang in the middle of King Cross, German Gymnasium stays true to its roots offering a great range of German wines. Here you can find Sekt (German sparkling wine) both by the glass and the bottle, Rieslings, plus some of the rarer indigenous German grape varieties, such as Lemberger and Müller-Thurgau. Enjoy inside a beautiful grade II listed building alongside German classics such as Black Forest Ham, Schupfnudeln and Wurst.
For the unconventional…Flavour Bastard
Flavour Bastard is the new soho haunt on the block whose menu offers a bold mix of cuisines from around the world. It opened to mixed reviews, but all agreed that their trump card was their wine list. In keeping with the zany restaurant concept, every wine on the list has an interesting tale behind it – fancy trying a German Pinot Noir from a haunted winery?
For the sipster…. Bedales
One for either the ‘seasoned tippler’ or the ‘novice gluggler’, Bedales has three sites around London (Borough, Spitalfields, Leadenhall). In all of these delightful spots they offer a range of wines by the glass and small plates to share. Although the wine list here changes with the seasons, there will always be a German Riesling or two to match with your food – just ask. Keep an eye out for wine tasting events here too.
For the adventurous….Sager + Wilde
Credited by some with kick-stating a revival in the London wine scene, Sager and Wilde launched their first site in 2013 and now have a couple of established restaurants in the capital with a new bar on its way for 2018. Sager and Wilde devotes its list to interesting, quirky producers – keep an eye out for Eva Fricke and Emil Bauer whose modern German wines feature on the list. Alongside the stellar wine selection, Sager and Wilde also focus on delicious, seasonally-led menus to complement their extensive list, so you can settle in for the evening!
And remember… this is just a small snapshot of the German wine scene in London, there are plenty more cosy corners and stacked cellars to explore. If we’ve missed your favourite off the list, let us know!
